Are Cold Sores and Genital Herpes Related?

There are 2 types of herpes virus:

Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 is usually the cause of cold sores on the mouth, lips, and face. This is the most common type that causes recurrent cold sores on the face.

Herpes simplex Virus type 2 is generally the cause of genital herpes.

A myth that people believe is that type 1 only causes sores above the waist, and type 2 only causes sores below the waist. Although there are 2 types of herpes, either virus can cause sores in different locations. It is possible to contract genital sores if you come in contact with someone who has facial sores, and vice versa. It is always important to not share eating utensils and other personal items that may spread the disease. The cold sores can be passed from person to person through skin-to-skin contact, especially when there are open sores.
