Cold Sore Medication

There are several different cold sore medications that can be used to treat cold sores. Keep in mind that these cold sore medications are not a cure for the condition, there is no known cure for cold sores. The sores are caused by the Herpes virus, and you will always have the virus in your body, even during the dormant times. The following medications can be used to treat the symptoms of cold sores, and lessen the severity and duration of the outbreak.

Over-The-Counter Cold Sore Medications:

  1. Abreva- This is a topical cream that is applied directly to the sore. It is approved by the FDA and has been show to shorten healing time. If you choose to use Abreva, it is necessary to apply the cold sore medicine immediately when the symptoms occur. This cold sore cream is most effective within the first 24 hours of the sore.
  2. Anbesol, Orajel, Zilactin- There are all creams and gels that are applied directly to the cold sore for pain relief. They do not contain any ingredients that slows down the virus or stops the cold sore from progressing, they are just used for pain relief.
  3. Lysine Cream- It has been found that L-Lysine will help to block the outbreak in some people. There are Lysine creams that can be applied to the affected area to slow down the progress and speed up healing time.
  4. Lysine supplements- Some people prefer to take Lysine supplements instead of applying the cream directly to the sore. Lysine is just an ammino acid, so they are more safe than taking a prescription cold sore medicine. Lysine supplements can be used during an outbreak to slow down the progress and speed up healing time, or they can also be taken as a preventative measure to prevent future outbreaks

Prescription Cold Sore Medicine:

Denavir ® and Zovirax ® are the only prescription medications approved by the FDA. They are anti-viral medications that stop the virus’ ability to replicate. Prescription cold sore medications should be used on a case-by-case basis, always consult your doctor about your personal situation.

You can find cold sore relief by using cold sore medications, but many people prefer to use a more natural approach and treat their cold sore through diet and lifestyle changes.
